For our seventh film in our “Saints and Sinners” series we will shift focus and screen a thriller: director Richard Dutcher’s second film Brigham City (2001, 119 minutes, rated PG-13). A theological mystery involving small-town heroes and a sinister villain, with Dutcher starring as a Utah sheriff and Mormon bishop forced to contend with both a serial killer and the collapse of the town’s conservative veneer provoked by the ensuing investigation.
Cinescope magazine proclaimed Brigham City as “a heartbreaking examination of the erosion of faith in God, presented not as an aberration or some moral failing but as a natural consequence of life on the material plane…the movie enjoys a measured pace and deliberate meting out of narrative information that harks back to classical American cinema. Thematically and stylistically anticipating Eastwood’s Mystic River (2003) but surpassing it in every way, Brigham City remains Dutcher’s greatest achievement.”
